The professional master’s degree promotes deepening in the studies with practical application in the market.
Have you heard of the professional master’s degree? Well, know that this modality of post-graduation is being increasingly valued in the labor market. All this because the courses prepare teachers to work in different areas, not only in the academic context. Read the story and know everything about this modality.
Many professionals even want to do masters but do not wish to teach in higher education or get stuck in a university laboratory. For this audience, the best option is the professional master’s degree, a postgraduate modality that combines theory and practice to leverage the career.
What is the professional master’s degree?
Although it has existed for almost two decades, only in recent years has the professional master’s degree popularized in USA as a great option for those who wish to specialize. Its focus is not theory and more theory, as it happens in the academic masters. It seeks, in fact, to encourage the student to do research and apply it at work.
At the time the professional master’s degree was created, one or two universities had the courage to bet on the modality. Years later, in 2007, the number of programs jumped to 184. Currently, the offer of courses is even greater, totaling 771 in the entire country.
Professional teachers are not restricted to acting in a university. They are encouraged to bring all the scientific knowledge acquired to the market in order to improve the quality of products, services and processes.
The professional master’s degree is a stricto sensu, therefore also prepares its students to teach in higher education. In this way, the master can act in the job market and also pursue a career in the academy.
The Ministry of Education is very fond of the results obtained with the professional master’s degree, so it decided to expand the modality for a professional doctorate. The Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) will receive proposals for programs of this new post-graduation from October.
How is the course?
The professional master’s degree lasts an average of two years, with a workload ranging from 360 to 720 hours. During this period, the master’s degree needs to study, prepare the work requested by the teachers, read the recommended works and continue their research. It is a well-graduated graduate, after all, forms masters for the productive sector.
Throughout the course, the master’s degree must be prepared to develop research in line with the practical needs of the labor market. The project must start from a real problem and propose solutions for a company or institution.
How does admission work?
Joining a master’s degree course is much easier than in an academic. This is because the number of candidates competing for a vacancy is lower and most educational institutions do not require the submission of a pre-research project as a requirement.
Although it is easier to enter, the new modality of masters as rigorous as the academic masters. Students need to study hard to develop a project and account for activities. In some cases, it is necessary to give up on weekends and holidays to dedicate to the course.
When it comes to professional masters, not everything is perfect. The course may weigh, and a lot, in the master’s budget.
The training of the professional master is much more expensive than that of the academic master. At Mackenzie University, for example, the price of the course is $ 67 thousand. In other educational institutions, the total value of the investment may exceed $ 100 thousand.
Another disadvantage of the modality is that there are no scholarships, as with the academic master’s degree. There are also no private and public funding lines for this type of postgraduate course.
Capes even offers a scholarship of just over $ 2 thousand per student, except that this offer has been used only for programs aimed at training teachers in the public network.
There are no scholarships for professional master’s degree because the promotion institutions understand that the masters are already in the job market, therefore, they have the financial conditions to pay for the course.
